[•] Finding a Minolta TC-1 film camera in today’s world.

Look what I found today. On a day out in the corner of my eye I saw a lovely gentleman named Andrew snapping away with his Minolta TC-1. Often the best conversations are started with people holding a camera and today was the day.

Over the years many of us have seen interviews on YouTube with Bellamy Hunt from Japan Camera Hunter talk about camera’s like the infamous Ricoh GR1 but there is also another small camera that’s very very cool. For me its the Minolta TC-1. It’s an ultra rare occasion as I live south of Sydney and we just don’t see people shooting with film especially with this type of camera.

Not only does Andrew have this beautiful camera but as a surprise he pulled out a medium format Hasselblad 903 SWC with a Carl Zeiss 38mm f4.5 SUPER WIDE from his bag. That’s was in excellent condition and you will have to take my word for it. From one photographer to another and talking I found out he was a massive Leica collector right up to owning a Leica M9 that doesn’t get much use as he is an avid film photographer. This really made my day and hope he says hi on one of my pages.

So if your out and about and you see some one with a camera it is always worth it just to say Hi because you never know where the conversation will take you..

On writing this little story I wish I took picture of his Hasselbald to compliment the photo of the Minolta TC-1. On another note what is your favourite camera the Minolta TC-1 or the Ricoh GR1?

The odds of winning Lotto are 100,000,000 to 1 and the odds of capturing a million dollar photograph are much closer than you think.

I am a very strong believer if you carry your camera with you everyday and an event happens or somebody super famous happens to walk by doing odd you can easily capture a frame with your camera and that split second of luck could bring you a windfall of something big.

Part of this principle is based on the saying the best camera is the one that’s with you but say you get a photo with your smart phone that image is less likely to get a good offer of dollars compared to a digital SLR photograph.

After many years of shooting I still believe that it is possible to take a million dollar photograph (It hasn’t happened yet for me but it might happen to you) and I’ve thought carrying that camera by my side everyday increases those odds.

As far fetched as it sounds to take a million dollar photograph have you ever heard that one photographer sold a picture of a potatoe for a large sum of money.  I’ll admit I have never photographed a potatoe but after hearing that story it is definitely at the top of my list to photograph one or maybe two 😉

Now if the odds of winning Lotto are 100,000,000 to 1 then the odds of taking a million dollar photograph surely has to be 500,000 to 1.

Here is the key to taking a million dollar photograph with 5 simple variations to help calculate your odds. They come down to your actions and a few factors;

1) How often you leave the house.
2) How many photographs you take per year.
3) The type of camera and lens combination you use.
4) Location of where you take the photograph. i.e outback of Timbuktu would decrease the odds Verse someone smack in the middle of a specific city.
5) A blessing of good old Irish Luck.

As funny as this all sounds if you were in Timbuktu you might get a photo of a Yeti and win big or you could be in the city and capture a famous person but at the end of the day just remember having that camera with you everyday could pay off big time or just pay off your camera.

The SLR Magic Anamorphot 2x 50 is a anamorphic lens adapter designed for cinematography. Increases image resolution and detail by squashing / compressing the image horizontally by a factor of 2x to allow maximum utilisation of the cameras’ sensor, especially those of “full frame” dimensions.

Anamorphic lenses therefore require subsequent stretching, in post-production or at projection. Intended for use with shooting at 4:3, bringing the intended output to a standard 2.39:1 wide format with a higher resolution than simply letter-boxing the image in camera. The lens features an adjustable dioptre for “sweet spot” adjustment controls on focus, “near” and “far”.

This SLR Magic anamorphic adapter also offers unique effects such as horizontal flare and streaks from light sources and ellipsoidal bokeh (great with the use of the optional +1.8 diopter), for cinematographers wanting a characteristic filmic look. Depth of field is also affected, as in practice when using an anamorphic lens a longer focal length is required in order to achieve the same angle of view. Therefore anamorphic lenses produce a shallower, more cinematic depth of field than a the same lens without the adapter.

The adapter has a 77mm front filter thread and a native 62mm rear thread. As such it is only suitable for lenses which have a front element size of 50mm or less. Limitations of close focusing is helped with the use of dioptres which further enhances image. resolution and sharpness on close / medium distance applications.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the additional weight of the Anamorphot adapter and extra strain placed on the taking lens the use of of lens support is essential at all times.

[•] Canon SLR Verse Leica M Rangefinder

SLR Vs Rangefinder

The fight between the ever popular SLR and the sleek Rangefinder.

SLR camera’s are well known for displaying digital readings in the viewfinder. Many people are too busy with their face hard pressed to the viewfinder watching and altering the shutter speeds and aperture that it distracts the emotional connection to just take a photograph. It is as reminiscent to watching a timer count down from 4000 to 0 and thats a long time spent watching that in shutter speed.

So with all this information flooding our eyes which include; white balance, multiple focusing points selection, custom controls and picture styles people get too lost with the basic’s of taking that photograph. You see it all the time the brain is flooded and half the time you see people just looking at the back of the screen and the emotional connection is lost. (Chimping was invented by the digital SLR)

Photography through a Rangefinder is a different story and that story have been un-altered for about 100 years. Looking at the design its quite simple and clear that a rangefinder connects you to the camera at your finger tips physically therefor it emotionally connects you to taking a photograph.

This is what I have found most enjoyable with photographing with a Leica compared to a SLR or newer digital SLR. The biggest light bulb moments I see with people when they first use a rangefinder they say “I am instantly connected” but when you ask them why? they just say that it “just feels right”…..and like the old saying “Can’t put my finger on it” and making a physical connection thats where it become’s far more emotional and spiritual. So you can see why a Leica photographer would call themselves a purist photographer.

When I picked up the Leica that connection was instantly changed and it was felt as I flipped, rotated and spun the camera in my hands . Looking closely at the design I said to myself those German’s have done it right. There’s a lot of thought that goes into designing a camera and technology doesn’t always have to take over completely and it doesn’t need too. We need to take a step back from the advanced technological side before worrying about the extra features in the next camera and what it has because you loose yourself from the basic purpose of just taking a photograph.

I have always loved photography since I first picked up a camera and admit both styles of camera’s compliment each other in many ways. Its a good feeling just take a photograph with the basic’s and there’s nothing wrong with that even though it might cost an arm a leg and an arm for that new Leica M. But to many that price point is a problem so where do we all find our selves.. Back at the beginning lost in the world of wasting time on the cheaper alternative 😉

[•] Canon New F-1 50th Anniversary Gold Edition Camera

 

 

Today I received something special. For over 10 years I have looked at this film camera and some will say what is it? and some will say I never knew Canon made that.. Drum roll this is the infamous Canon New F-1 50th Anniversary Camera.

Released in 1987 and only a handful made which I’m still trying to find out numbers. Some come with the AE finder on top but I preferred the lower profile and think there are not many in this version compared to the AE one..

This was found in Japan and posted within a few days which surprised me even more. Upon opening I received a beautiful origami swan and stunning Japanese postcards as a gift with the camera. quite delightful and heartwarming how the Japanese people present such a package.

After the box came out of the box I was then struck in the head with “I have the golden ticket” song stuck in my head for the rest of the afternoon.

This then got me thinking wouldn’t it be nice if Canon released a chocolate bar and someone won a Golden Wrapper to claim a special Canon 5DIV in todays camera releases..

All I can say is WOW what a camera and very very special when held in my hands..

Last but not least I will cherish and use this camera and might even one day use it at a future Leica opening for kicks.
